economist: britain to freeze as gulf stream weakens

dec 5th

couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people :-)

this business of global warming is getting to be really serious. just look at what's happened in the us and india: katrina and rita, severe flooding in bombay, bangalore and madras.

if sea levels rise, that means, of course, goodbye, bombay, goodbye, madras, and goodbye, bangladesh. suddenly landlocked bangalore and hyderabad become a lot more attractive, and so does upcountry delhi.

Off Topic again....

Rajeev,

Today happens to be the anniversary of the day when Babri Masjid was demolished from the Ram Janma Bhoomi at Ayodhya.

Many jehadis and some 'eminent' seculars are doing monkey antics like wearing black to mark protests and all kind of nautanki.
Anyway Police is in high alert in highly sensitive places...

Another thing I wanted to report was how our idiotic marxist media edit/alter the news.
Whenever a miscreant is a christist/Jehadi they report as person belonging to 'a community', they dont give as muslim or christian.
Esp, when an issue of conversion, for example the masala Deccanchronicle wrote a news piece abt a suicide of a boy, where his parents suspected 2 people who were coaxing him to convert him to 'another religion'. One can clearly see acts of christists here. then why not give it out?
But when these buggers are at the recieving end, then you see reports, not just from'secular media, but also from outside, many 'human rights' organisations come out, we even have Pakistani general teaching India 'Secularism'!
immediately blames are given on Bajrang Dal, VHP, Shiv Sena... then some say its BJP/RSS/Sangh Parivar, some say its upper castes, then they go ahead saying its casteism... then go ahead saying its hinduism which is at fault..... Hence convert!!!!

These buggers should be kicked on their asses for trying to play with their propoganda...

Rajeev,

Let me be a contrarion,
Somehow I think that Global Warming is higly exaggerated.
It will be me to difficult to argue as it will require fair knowledge in fields as diverse as climatology , glacialogy and even biology, which I do not posses.
The reason I am uneasy with this alarmism is the book "State of Fear", by Michael Crichton (one of my favourite author),
While admittedly not one of his best books in term of narrative or plot, neverthless his arguements are worth looking.

I've not read M. Crichton's "State of Fear," but one has to realize that the levels of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides have never been higher than in the 20th and 21st centuries. Yes, on a geological time scale it's probably hard to prove that the alarming rise in floods and hurricanes are caused by manmade events. However, I haven't seen any reputed scientist side with Crichton's arguments. In fact, I think Crichton's book was one of the pieces of "evidence" that a Republican US senator showed when questioned about climate change! The only people that say that climate change is not a result of manmade activities are the ones that are paid to say so by the government of G. Bush.

Anyway, the more rapidly we can get away from fossil fuels and develop alternative energy resources, the better off we will be, global warming or not.

Anon,

While Crichton was against the alarmism, his position was more nuanced. In brief,

1) We do not know that present global warming is man made or natural.

2) We do not know whether it is for minor interval or major period (In geological sense). Our prediction is not so accurate as to predict even 20 years in future.

3)We do not know enough about Climate to effectively manage it.

4) Kyoto protocal was estimated to decrease the temperature by some 0.25 to 0.50 Celsius (not sure on this point)

5) It is not wise to implement for steps without doing cost-benefit analysis

"In fact, I think Crichton's book was one of the pieces of "evidence" that a Republican US senator showed when questioned about climate change!"

You are saying basically that being referenced by Republicans make it invalid, I dont see what it has to do with political affiliations.

" The only people that say that climate change is not a result of manmade activities are the ones that are paid to say so by the government of G. Bush"

This arguements is similiar to what CPM and CPI say in India.

As I said before I am not an expert on this, but I have grown wary of the prophets of doom who more often than not are false

As it is, we have a massive Bangladeshi immigrant problem. What would happen if Bangladesh begins to go under, iterally? Would it be bye-bye, Northeastern states? Or would we have the stomach to hold fast against people that carved themselves out of India and wanted to go separate anyway, and ask them to emigrate elsewhere, say East, or North to China?

Rajeev,
Isnt it OK that certain parts of the Northern Hem are indeed getting colder? I know you arent the local expert on this but thisis probably nature's way of balancing the polar ice-melt.

PS: I always thought Eng was cold and wet throughout the year, a horrible kind of climate. So, if it werent for these currents, Eng would be colder? I guess more beer is the norm then.

This argument does not have anything to do with politics. All I am saying is that nobody in the scientific community supports M. Crichton's assertions. As far as a cost-benefit analysis goes, you only have to read Jared Diamond's latest book to realize what happens when you disregard nature in the path to progress.

DarkStorm,

Precisely,

Climate pattern follow chaos theory.

How can you predict chaos theory, I do not think there are any accurate prediction model for climate change
