comparing the different sports is like comparing apples and peaches. the basketball regulations are similar to NFL. legacies like chicago bulls crumbled after the likes of Jordan and Pippen left. Even in the NBA draft the worst teams pick the best rookies. And I wouldnt call it is an analogy to reservations. More as an analogy for subsidization for the disadvantged. Football in Europe has many more outside influences the most famous one being the free movement for employmenhy within the EU. And pinning the semi-finalists down to their imperialist past is simply foolhardy as there presence is justified on football merit and not for thier colonial pasts.

Rajeev,
what is wrong with you these days? you articles are soooo unlike you and lack the wider perspective. With due respect let me say this is one of the worst artiles I read.

How can you compare NFL and FIFA. NFL is a national organisation where as FIFA is an international org comprising of FA's of various countries. You mentioned that all the semifinalists are Colonisers. If it is the case why England isnt there? Is there any better coloniser than the Queens' empire? Remember they have won the world cup only Once..!!! You need to compare NFL with various leagues in Europe. They are much similar. There are rich clubs and there are poor culbs.

Chelsea has been a also ran club till last year. But when the club was bought by Roman Abrohomovic of Russia and he started pumpin his oil money Chelsea has one of the best teams in Europe. It is a level playing field provided you have merit. Manchester United before 1990s was a team that was almost relegated from the Premier League. but when they started playing well and started winning....they are one of the best in Europe today.

Similarly, FIFA has given enough reservations to participate in the world cup. If it is true merit do you think Saudi Arabia and Iran would be qualified? There is a push to compete with the best in the world. But after that you need to prove yourself. There is no reservation after the first round. We are also following the same in India. There is enough encouragement in primary education. The disadvantaged are given enough chance to compete with the uppper caste kids. But if they still want reservations in Higher Education it simply means that the reservation at primary level us useless. Let them not have it. We will give reservation in higher education and ask them to drop the reservation at primary level. Sounds very funny ..isnt it? It is the same Rajeev! You teach the kids to walk when they just started walking. If you still want to help them when they are considerably old ...you make them Cripples.
