DEEPA MEHTA'S 'WATER' TARGET OF NEW PROTESTS
Lucknow, 9 Feb. (AKI/Asian Age) - The Oscar-nominated film "Water" has, once again, started stoking fires in Varanasi. A report published in a local Hindi daily two days ago claimed that he film, by leading director Deepa Mehta, allegedly shows a eunuch making derogatory remarks about Mahatma Gandhi. Congress party activists staged demonstrations in the holy city on Wednesday demanding a ban on the film and burnt effigies of Deepa Mehta and her film.
A group of young men belonging to the Rahul Gandhi Vichar Manch movement announced that they would not allow Water to be released in India and the local Congress MP, Rajesh Misra, even held a press conference to declare that he was writing a letter to the information and broadcasting minister Priya Ranjan Das Munshi seeking his intervention.
Talking to the Indian newspaper Asian Age on correspondent on Thursday, Ravikant Dubey of the Rahul Gandhi Vichar Manch said: "We have seen the DVD of Water and certain portions in the film are highly objectionable because they seek to insult the Father of the Nation. We will ensure that the film does not get released in India and that Deep Mehta apologises for hurting the sentiments of the people."
Water is expected to be released in India later this month and the people of Varanasi have already announced that they would not allow the film to be screened in the holy city.
It may be recalled that Water was initially to be shot in Varanasi in January 2000 and the entire unit and cast of the film had even started shooting in the holy city when violent protests erupted and the crew was forced to abandon shooting after a protester attempted suicide.
Six years later, Deepa Mehta shot Water in Sri Lanka with a new cast and the film has now been winning accolades. "Our stand has finally been vindicated. When we protested against the film in 2000, we were termed as communal and self-styled culture vultures, but now it is the Congress that has seen the truth behind Deep Mehta's intention," said K.K. Misra, who had led the movement against the film in 2000.
