not that i am necessarily defending lacrosse-playing white-boys ruffians, but see how this scenario is played out in india too.
any hindu is guilty until painstakingly proven innocent, and their lives would have been ruined in the years that it takes to do this (eg. that teacher who was framed as a pimp).
any mohammedan is innocent even if proven guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt (eg. the parliament terrorist afzal guru).
