So, the Congress wanted someone to counter NCP-Shiv Sena nexus that was looking more and more probable with the each passing day. Raj Thackeray and his MNS provided the perfect opportunity for India’s grand old party.
Aware of its plight and inability to counter Pawar’s clout over Maharashtra, the Congress has pinned its hopes on the younger Thackeray. The party’s Delhi-based think-tank’s view is that Raj’s growing stature will eat into the Sena base and eventually benefit the Congress. Some of the leaders ET spoke to dropped enough indications as to what’s playing in the leadership’s mind. "If we wanted, Raj could have been put behind bars a week ago," a Congress leader, who didn’t want to be identified, said while explaining the rationale behind giving some breathing space to the MNS chief.
Raj made his alleged controversial speech on February 1. The violence, though sporadic, erupted from very next day in Mumbai. But the police took 10 days to take the first step of filing an FIR and full 12 days to arrest him. The Congress’ complacency was evident from the chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh’s reaction to the overall issue. It took almost a week for Mr Deshmukh to give his formal reaction denouncing violence.

What was witnessed in Maharashtra was cynical politics at its worst. It followed the methodology of a party that tacitly built up Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale to outmanoeuvre the Akalis and pumped up the ULFA in Assam to cripple the AGP. Consciously or unwittingly, Raj Thackeray played the Congress game and he is certain to be rewarded for it.
The Order of Leopold is one of the three Belgian national honorary Orders. It is the highest Order of Belgium and is named in honour of King Leopold I. The decoration was established in 1832 and is awarded for extreme bravery in combat or for meritorious service of immense benefit to the Belgian nation.
