iphone to debut in india courtesy vodaphone

may 6th, 2008

i think a bunch of people in india already have grey-market iphones. anyway, there is no 3G in india, so the present-generation iphone will suffice. the rumored new 3G iphone is slated to be announced by steve jobs at macworld, or so say the rumor mills. which means the EDGE/GPRS current iphone 1.0 will be selling at a discount, say at $200 or so? that will be considered a mid-level phone in india, as people routinely shell out rs. 20,000 for high-end phones. therefore there might be huge uptake for a cheap iphone 1.0 in india.

Well Rajeev,
I read in papers that vodafone will bring iphone to India and it might cost Rs. 27000.
I already have an iphone (no not grey market as our media broadly describes it) from a friend in US for $399 (actually $432 after tax) and unlocked it (from original AT&T to Vodafone)for free using some software from internet.
So, I spent effectively Rs. 16000 (As per the jan-feb exchange rates) and got an iphone long before it debuted in India that too at almost Rs. 11000 lesser.
Yes, I might lose out on warranty and other aspects... but still owning an iphone has its advantages, altough at that price (not 27K Im talking aof 16k) I'll get a mobile with more features than my iphone.
