Hi Rajeev,

This is interesting; though hardly surprising. Wonder if ever there will be action taken in this regard.

Sometime in (August) 2006, Allahabad High Court directed the govt to stop providing financial support for Haj. On an appeal by the govt, the Supreme Court, in September 2006, declined to stay the Allahabad High Court order, but allowed the govt to go ahead with the "arrangements made for that year [2006]". In November 2006, the govt increased the number of subsidy-receiving Haj pilgrims from 100,000 to 110,000, apparently in defiance of the Allahabad HC and SC orders.
In January 2008, Supreme Court "cleared" Haj subsidy for 2008, and "provision of a grant to Mansarovar pilgrims by the Centre for this year".
The confusing picture I get is that the HC and SC have passed orders for stopping the Haj subsidy, and at the same time have allowed the subsidy for the next three years. Can anyone throw light on this?
