caste as social capital. i agree with prof vaidya's DNA perspective. caste is a useful system, we should say so.

why, i won't be surprised if soon the christists take credit for inventing caste. yup, we christists brought caste to india along with our other hoaxes like (the non-existent) jesus in kashmir, and (the two-skeletoned) 'saint' thomas in kerala. here they have embraced it fully, while -- naturally, hypocrites that they are -- they decry it from the rooftops.

it is interesting that black mohammedans in the west decry genital mutilation as an 'african cultural artifact', not a mohammedan artifact.

it appears that caste is an 'indian cultural artifact', not a hindu artifact.

mohammedans are very caste conscious too. top caste -- arabs. in that, top: mohammed's tribe of qureishis (?). in that, top: mohammed's very large extended family. next lower caste -- whites. next -- southeast asians. next (lowest): indian subcontinentals. the bottom of the heap: females.

in india, ansaris are considered below qureishis and so on.

this isn't a caste system?

Even among converted Christians, caste plays a major role, at least in AP. Reddy and upper caste converts get more benefits compared to lower caste Christians. I have seen this first hand where a certain Reddy convert was given car benefits, barber benefits along with rice and other groceries, his family is granted front row seats for services along with other upper caste patrons. Where as low caste patrons were either asked to opt for different time for prayers or sit in back/yard for that service.

Some time back there was a major spat with lower caste converts wanting to form their own church because of overt caste-ism. Of course it didn't make it to main stream media, they were busy with trying to find "Hindu Terrorists" for 26/11 massacre.
