hmmm... android under a cloud?

jan 20th, 2011

this, along with eric schmidt giving up the CEO post at google, makes me wonder!

Can Google protect Android? Florian Mueller, self-described intellectual-property activist, writes in a blog post carried by theGuardian that Google's patent portfolio is too small and too narrowly focused. Two things of note: Mueller thinks Oracle's Java-related lawsuit over Android will come at a huge cost to Google — and the Android ecosystem. On the other hand, Mueller points out that of the 10 Android-related lawsuits started in 2010, Google was named in only three of them. Might Google's partners, the phone manufacturers, be left in the lurch? Mueller: "Patent issues may turn Android-based devices into an unprofitable business at some point, regardless of consumer demand, and at that point it will be hard for anyone other than Google to make any money with Android."
