one word: governance. How did Gujarat Become a Farming Paradise? - Forbes India

apr 24th, 2011 CE

this is also why the bureaucrats in gandhinagar don't like modi. they are being forced to do some work for their cushy sinecures.

actually, two words: governance, corruption-free.

this is the kind of miracle the rest of india also needs, not more city-building.

india's competitive advantage has always been in agriculture (and intellectual property). both of these have been massacred by the stalinists.

but it is hopeful that arid gujarat, with israeli-style water conservation, is getting 10% growth in agriculture. india should be the world's pre-eminent food power.

Organization of Food Exporting Countries (OFEC) ki jai! yo OPEC: you can eat sand, or we will barter with you -- one chicken for 1 barrel of oil. sounds fair, doesn't it?

The onset of summer in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat can be a
frightening prospect. The rocky terrain of low hills and the semi-arid
plains begin to radiate immense heat. Rivers and wells dry up in
tandem. Water shortage looms large and the memory of the severe
drought of 1999-2000 returns to haunt. God bless the man who tries to
indulge in cultivation of crops in these parts.

But that’s exactly what hundreds of farmers do several times a year in
the heart of this unfriendly terrain. Wheat, cotton, banana, papaya,
sugarcane, tomatoes and a variety of other crops sprout all over,
erasing forever the cliché of Saurashtra being a parched expanse.

Today, one can spot crops that weren’t grown in these parts just four
or five years ago. In Adtala village, farmer Vallabhai Patel, who was
previously cultivating cotton, grows papayas. With a limited supply of
water, he got plentiful yield.

In Sarangpur, also in Saurashtra, Swami Arunibhagat is surely a
God-blessed man. A leader of the liberal religious group, Swaminarayan
Movement, he has converted 175 acres of dry land into a lush haven for
sugarcane, tomatoes and genetically modified cotton. He has achieved
record yields that have attracted farmers from more fertile lands to
come and learn how he did it. It almost looks like a miracle wrought
by Lord Hanuman of the famous temple in Sarangpur.

why mention chicken?..and that too in an article related to Gujurat..wouldn't a pack of bread been enough....why desensitize the life of another innocent living being.

Seriously Joy can you get off your veggie crusading?

How about all you hypocritical Hindu vegetarians look at your oh so pure communities, they tend to have much worse sex ratios. Jains had the second worst sex ratio after Sikhs last census. Places that are much more vegetarian like Haryana or Gujarat have worse sex ratios as a whole than the Southern states. I hope you know what the Dharmashastra's have to say regarding abortion.

As my meat eating Gujarati Koli friend put it, my family may jhatka a goat but we would never do a vile deed like aborting our children.

This is a very important issue for Hindu society. Hope all you veggies get your priorities right or else many of your communities will end up with Draupadi style marriages or homosexual relationships for lack of women.

I've absolutely no idea what Julian is talking about and what has all that got to do with what I said. Seriously dude you need to stop getting high and writing gibberish at the same time.

btw....you nincompoop ...I'm a vegan and it has nothing to do with religion...just pure ethics...something which you obviously lack.

"I've absolutely no idea what Julian is talking about and what has all that got to do with what I said."

Obviously showing that you are a brainless twit.

I have seen you around on HINDU blogs and sites pimping your veggie BS.

I just pointed out that many so called Hindu veggie communities kill their daughters, so you hypocrites should do something about that in your own communities before preaching to meat eating Hindus.

"Seriously dude you need to stop getting high and writing gibberish at the same time."

Is this the best you can come up with you worthless moron?

"btw....you nincompoop ...I'm a vegan and it has nothing to do with religion...just pure ethics...something which you obviously lack."

lol what "ethics" are these?

made up ethics of internet veggie clown "Joy" who doesn't know the basics of human biology and evolutionary history?

Don't think you can spout your BS unchallenged here.

Yes its so brave of you to hide behind the name "Joy" right.

Why don't you put up your address, show your bravery.

"dude (hoping u r not an eunuch )...get a life."

I think you are projecting.

Your contribution on this blog has been practically NOTHING except to come out and spew PETA type nonsense once in a blue moon.

When you are prepared to make any contribution with facts and figures people will take you a bit more seriously cyber warrior wannabe macho man named "Joy".

namaste Nizhal Yoddha (I guess aka Rajeev),

Since the inception in 2004, I've regularly come and read this blog is because I've loved your (along with Varsha Bhosale) articles in rediff. If a uncultured person like "Julian" is a respected member, then I admit to have lost respect for this particular blog community.

All I'd stated was a request about not de-sensitizing & trivializing the life of other living beings. Guess that touched the respected member's raw nerve. I've absolutely no idea what the respected member writes about. What is a "koli" and what on earth is a "jhatka". What has sex ratios of Indian states and some other folks doing abortions got to do with my statement of bartering bread for oil vs chicken for oil. And which is the community that I allegedly belong to should be reforming. I humbly admit I'm totally lost here.

“Internet veggie clown”, “wannabe macho man” etc...Yeah right!...Not sure in which universe is having “karuna/daya” termed as macho and funny. Guess you guys are being real polite here.. :o)

My compassionate lifestyle has more to do with seeing death, studying Gita/upanishads and the works of Immanuel kant. Guess some only have balls to use al-taqiyya against other right leaning fellow hindus. You should very well know that Joy is a common name among malayali Hindus too.

I admit, the puerile attempts like dissecting and debating a line at a time is mildly entertaining, but it won't get one far. No wonder our sanataana dharma is in such dire straits. In the past, I've exchanged difference of opinions over emails against the likes of Dilip D'Souza etc.. and found them to be more civil than your respected member..guess maybe one why there are more left leaning hindus in contemporary times. Your coterie reminds me of Anna Hazare’s cohorts.

I'm not here to win accolades or your respect. I admit that I did resort to some name calling and I'm extremely embarrassed about it too..and apologize. But politeness and respect is mutual...not something which one demands. I'll give to the one who deserves it..something I had for you all these years. Either way, I won't be increasing the hits on this blog anymore.

Kaliyuga is sure funny....Here I'm debating to save lives and reduce suffering and your respected community member is hollering Kill..Kill..kill and we call the others barbarians....imagine the irony. adieu...

I personally cannot stand being preached to on being vegetarian, and upto that point, Julian, I agree with you. I query some of the data and logic though.

Vegetarian communities have poorer gender ratios?

Haryana and Gujarat are the more vegetarian states? They're comparable? And they're more vegetarian than the southern states? And all southern states are more or less equal?

There is causality in any direction between being vegetarian and having the tendency to abort the girl child?

nutwit said...

Cant we just forget this whole episode. After all its about a trivial issue. There are still greater things to fight for like terrorism, ill treatment to Hindus etc. Its sad that we Hindus struggle to successfully run organizations - infighting, back-biting creep up too soon. Bhagat Singh and Subhashchandra Bose exit the scene early while like of Nehru and Gandhi live long. I read somewhere that this is a sign of slavery and low self respect. We havent shrugged off the colonial legacy...

"Vegetarian communities have poorer gender ratios?"

As a whole yes.

Jains are right behind Sikhs with the second worst sex ratio according to last census. Last I checked the Jain community as such was predominantly vegetarian.

"Haryana and Gujarat are the more vegetarian states? They're comparable? And they're more vegetarian than the southern states? And all southern states are more or less equal?"

Yes both Haryana and Gujarat are more vegetarian than Southern states, last time a survey was done the South had a lot more meat eaters in % terms.

One doesn't need any survey anyways, if one visited these states he/she would know.

Some Southern states have more meat eaters like Kerala for example than others.

"There is causality in any direction between being vegetarian and having the tendency to abort the girl child?"

I didn't say there was a causality but there seems to be a correlation. So what I am telling all these veggie crusaders among Hindus is, physician heal thyself.

I will only give example, that magazine Hinduism Today can't seem to go even one week without some vegetarian article yet they rarely if ever discuss the far bigger problem of abortion and sex selective abortion in particular. Setting aside the immoral nature of the practice it aids in the Muslim and Christian demographic advance.

"Bhagat Singh and Subhashchandra Bose exit the scene early while like of Nehru and Gandhi live long."

Bhagat was a communist and so was Bose.

Bose was a much worse secularist than Gandhi and Nehru put together just so you know.

Check:

http://bharatendu.wordpress.com/2011/02/10/subhas-chandra-bose/

If you want to imagine India under Bose, just imagine Mao with a Muslim friendly touch.

Check the comments here by by Joy and other so called vegetarians against this Hindu community:

http://www.haindavakeralam.com/HkPage.aspx?PAGEID=13253&SKIN=B

"blind superstition" "cult" etc.

All because they don't happen to be PETA types like himself.

So I am guessing the Vedic Rishi's were also filled with "blind superstition" when they performed pashu bali for some of their rites?

So why pay lip service to Vedas at all as many iskconites do.

Also note his defense of ISKCON despite their questionable tactics and beliefs. ISKCON teaches that only Krishna is worthy of worship while labelling others "demigods" but has no problem equating Krishna with Jesus and Allah. But "Joy" doesn't seem to have any problems with that, instead his ire is directed against this traditional Hindu community for their practices.
