vishu is NOT malayalam new year. it is, however tamil new year.

malayalam new year is celebrated on the day the town of kollam (quilon) was established, and it falls on chingam 1, (leo 1) in august. in 2013 CE, we will move from 1188 ME (malabar era) to 1189 ME.
