China Turns Up Nose at Philippines Disaster

With typhoon-stricken Philippines wallowing in tragedy, many nations have stepped in with aid and assistance. The United States has sent $20 million and an aircraft carrier group to help. Japan is giving $10 million in assistance, and Britain and Australia have each offered similar amounts. The EU is offering $17 million in aid.

The govt of China - the world's second largest economy - is offering $100,000.

When China was hit by the Sichuan earthquake the Philippines sent $450,000 and a medical team in support. Even India sent China $5M back then.

Qin Gang, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told reporters on Monday that China would send that amount to help the Philippines recover from a disaster that has left as many as 10,000 people dead. Asked if the donation was scaled according to the current chill in relations between China and the Philippines, Mr. Qin declined to answer.

They seem to be giving their answer all too clearly.
