Friends this is common Muslim strategy. Come back with a mob armed with sticks and rods perhaps choppers to intimidate Hindus. A friend in Thane got into something similar years ago, when threatened he told the Muslim youth that Shiv Sainiks were on the way and he was a noted lawyer. They apologised immediately.

In an incident that has caused widespread outrage, a 42-year-old dentist was dragged out of his house in west Delhi's Vikaspuri on Wednesday and beaten with iron rods and hockey sticks by amob from a nearby slum. He died early on Thursday when the rest of the city began celebrating Holi. The provocation for this brutal murder was a scuffle Dr Pankaj Narang had got involved in when a rashly driven bike brushed against him in front of his house in Krishna Park colony.

He had snapped at the two bikers and asked them to drive carefully which led to an argument and a fracas.

The bikers left, only to rush to a nearby slum, Indira Camp No. 4, their home. They roped in friends to return within half-an-hour, audaciously drag the dentist out of his house and assault him so severely that he was dead by next morning. The dentist's eightyear-old son, Aditya, was witness to the incident.

There were over 12 people in the mob, including four juveniles. All the juveniles are in the 16-18 age-group.

 

Joint commissioner, southwestern range, Depender Pathak said the prime accused, Nasir Khan, and a juvenile who had led the attack were held within 24 hours of the incident. Nasir's mother, Mayassar, who had instigated the mob along with his brother, Amir, and friends Ameer and Gopal were arrested soon after. Three other juveniles who had hit the dentist with baseball bats that caused the fatal head injuries were also apprehended. "A team has been formed to track the rest of the accused and arrest them," said Pathak.

Whether it was pent-up rage, aggravated by economic disparity, or sheer goondaism, Dr Narang won't have bargained for this when he had returned to his house after his brother-in-law, Vikas Sethi, intervened and resolved the matter. His son had around 11.45pm gone out of the house to re trieve a ball and he and Sethi had followed him. They were playing cricket in a courtyard outside their house that's located in a service lane beside Ring Road. India had just trounced Bangladesh in a sudden reversal of fortune and Aditya wanted to play.

The family members told the police that the ball had bounced over the gate and rolled to the other side of the lane. Aditya had run out to pick it up when two youths passing by on a Bajaj Pulsar bike brushed against Narang who was with the child.

 

This led to an argument and a physical confrontation. The situation was, however, defused.

Neighbours said that about half-an-hour later, Nasir returned with a mob of 25-30 people and started pelting stones at Narang's house. When Narang and Sethi rushed out, Nasir and his friends dragged them out of the gate and started thrashing them brutally. Eyewitnesses said they were dragged for over 50 metres and assaulted all the while with cricket bats, hockey sticks and iron rods until both of them fell unconscious. The youths then threatened the family members and left.

 

Narang's wife, Upama, managed to inform cops and drive the two injured men to Chanan Devi Hospital. Narang was later taken to a private hospital where he died. Sethi is said to be out of danger, police said.

 

Narang's colleague, Gagan Bhatia, said the family had informed the police immediately following which a team reached the scene. CCTV footage in which the accused were seen running towards Narang's house was scanned and at least 11 people identified.

 

Nasir has told the police that he used to sell fish in the colony along with Amir. He claimed he was returning from a friend's house when he got into an argument with Narang. The family of the dentist is yet to come to terms with the incident and has withdrawn into the house. Bhatia said Narang and his wife used to run a dental clinic at Tilak Nagar. His father, Vinod Narang, had also been a doctor and passed away two years back while his mother was a teacher at a government school. Narang's sister was married to Sethi, a businessman based in Noida.

 

Sethi, according to family members, was visiting Narang for Holi. "We never imagined that things would turn out like this for the family," said Bhatia. A case under sections related to murder, trespassing, rioting and common intention has been registered against all the accused.
