Fwd: Can India stop being obsessed with salaried jobs by Sanjeev Nayyar in Economic Times

Can India stop being obsessed with salaried jobs
By Sanjeev Nayyar, March 23 2018

Recently Prime Minister Modi said that, "Even selling pakodas is a job". Congress leader Chidambaram wanted to know how many jobs had been created. A few days later the World Bank said, "India needs to create regular, salaried jobs with growing earnings rather than self-employed ones in order to join the ranks of the global middle class by 2047." http://www.livemint.com/Politics/8z4W8cGyFp4JTHBiLwqEWN/India-needs-to-create-more-salaried-jobs-World-Bank.html

In the absence of credible data the political tug-of war on jobs shall continue. Having said that, one way to ascertain job growth is to look at corporate and industrial data.

Hypersonic Missiles Changing the Face of War

The advent of hypersonic missile systems may radically change the way in which warfare is carried out:

India's BrahMos cruise missile is supersonic and not a hypersonic weapon. It currently has a short range of 300km, which is now being upgraded to 600+ km range. The BrahMos-2 missile will be hypersonic.Weapons like these will be particularly deadly against Pakistan, but meanwhile China's main strategic assets are located quite far away from the border with India, so India would have to develop much longer-range weapons. Fortunately, India is now part of the MTCR, which can help it gain more access to the necessary technology, particularly from Russia.

  • Indian Army's lack of direction: First invest in human beings – not platforms. As every growing economy has realised it is the soldier, not the machine that wins wars. First they need to get rid of the sahayak system, and over the top perks enjoyed by the officer core, including golf courses and golf carts. Then they need to start investing in serious body armour, and rifles for soldiers, while selling their many priceless properties that they don’t need.

Countries in East Asia, led by China, have been pursuing a military buildup for years.
Submarines, flexible platforms with strategic uses, have been a particular focus.
Uncertainty about the balance of power in the region has stoked countries' pursuit of military hardware.

3. China's strategic vulnerabilities make it assailable 21.3.18 by Dr Subhash Kapila http://www.indiandefencereview.com/chinas-strategic-vulnerabilities-make-it-assailable/

India's war-preparedness against a China-Pakistan imposed "Two Front War" scenarios must be placed on a fast-track mode and the Indian policy establishment not lulled into complacency of an under-emphasised or de-emphasised 'China Threat' by certain sections in the Indian policy establishment. Concurrently, the Indian policy establishment should minutely scrutinise China's strategic vulnerabilities so that these could be exploited by India to off-set the power asymmetry with China.

Beyond just importing more generic medicine from India, China could consider ways to cooperate with India in developing its own generic sector. India, for its part, can encourage its drugmakers to cooperate with their Chinese counterparts'

6. The neighbourhood tangle by G Parthasarathy 22.3.18 http://www.tribuneindia.com/news/comment/the-neighbourhood-tangle/561352.html
While some concern has been voiced about Russian arms supplies to Pakistan, the Russians are well aware of the fact that a cash-strapped Pakistan cannot afford to buy its frontline equipment, which is presently confined to purchase of some MI 35 attack helicopters. The Russians also know that the Indian market will be closed for the equipment they supply to Pakistan. The greater concern in New Delhi, however, arises from Russian readiness to join with China and Pakistan in seeking to give legitimacy to the Afghan Taliban. This is rather ironic, given the fact that approximately 14,000 Soviet soldiers were killed and more than 35,000 wounded in action between 1979 and 1989 against ISI backed radical Islamic armed Afghan groups.'
Moreover, there are substantial prospects for increasing Russian supplies of coal, diamonds, LNG and fertilizers to India. Interestingly, while the much touted 2014 Russian gas deal with China was expected to generate $ 400 billion by gas sales to China, thedrastic fallin gas prices is likely to reduce the returns by well over 60%. There is also considerable potential for Russia and India to reinforce each other, in executing energy and rail transportation projects in third countries, like Afghanistan and Vietnam. Russia and India are presently cooperating in the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Bangladesh.
The Russians view China's meteoric rise and its growing population, as a threat to their Siberian region and even to Vladivostok. The Soviet Union and Mao's China, loathed each other, from the very inception of Communist rule in China. Mao waskept waiting for months in 1949, before he got to call on Stalin, who met him only after he met Indian Ambassador Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, in January 1950. Mao made no secret about his contempt for both Stalin and Khrushchev.

Quick notes: Solar parks, Quality of living...

  • India's vast solar parks: Unlike in developed nations, the vast majority of solar power in India comes not from decentralized rooftop panels but from expansive parks. Indian authorities have enticed developers by acquiring land, building transmission links and offering up buyers for the new power, usually state-owned companies with low default risk.

But as happened with the 2012 U.S.-brokered deal for Chinese and Philippine naval vessels to withdraw from around the Scarborough Shoal, China did not faithfully comply with the Doklam accord. If anything, China applied the Scarborough "model" to Doklam -- agree to disengage and, after the standoff is over, quietly send in forces to occupy the territory.
In effect, Beijing has shown Bhutan that India cannot guarantee its territorial integrity.
The Indian government recently told Parliament that the number of Chinese military intrusions into India's vulnerable borderlands jumped 56% in one year -- from 273 in 2016 to 426 in 2017, or more than one per day.
Last year, China breached two bilateral accords with India by withholding upstream river flow data, which is necessary for flood forecasting and warning.

SN – Indians suffer from lack of confidence which is why they rejoice at the smallest achievement. We must put our heads down and work silently for atleast 10 yrs if we have to catch up with the world.

4. Tango or not, India must remain steadfast with China; Beijing's call for 'friendship' could be another ploy by Lt Gen Prakash Katoch 19.3.18: http://www.firstpost.com/india/tango-or-not-india-must-remain-steadfast-with-china-beijings-call-for-friendship-could-be-another-ploy-4395735.html

5. Chabhar could be a model for India China cooperation 19.3.18 http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1094148.shtml
But the results of India-Iran cooperation proved less fruitful than expected as a result of Western sanctions, according to media reports. In this context, China is one of a handful of countries that has continued trade links with Tehran and is its largest oil client. China and India can complement each other on Chabahar Port construction. In addition, Gwadar Port in Pakistan, a flagship project of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, lies barely 100 kilometers from Chabahar. Given the extreme proximity of the two ports, stakeholders can share resources in the development of the two projects.
SN – must grant it to the Chinese media. After the land grabbing and aggressive posture they talk of cooperation.

India's dilemma is neatly summed up in the U.S.'s National Intelligence Council report, 'Global Trends: The Paradox of Progress', "Geopolitically, [South Asia's] greatest hope is India's ability to use its economic and human potential to drive regional trade and development. At the same time, Afghanistan's uncertain prospects, extremism and violence in Pakistan, and the ever-present risk of war between India and Pakistan probably represent the greatest challenge to unlocking the region's potential."
Recently, it was announced that the government was planning to raise nine ITBP battalions to "reduce the inter BoP (border outpost) distance" along the China border. Not only does this reflect an inadequate understanding of how the border is to be manned but completely ignores the existing deployment of the Army. A comprehensive and an integrated approach to border management could result in considerable savings.
The military must stop talking in terms of numbers, of squadrons, ships and divisions, and focus on capability.
There is a crying need to move towards greater integration among the three services and with the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The luxury of each service running its own training, administrative and logistics system is no longer affordable.

Quick notes: Digital tax, Renewable natural gas...

Digital tax on "Big Tech": EU to tax US tech titans not just on their profits but on their overall revenue in the bloc. Tax-avoidance strategies used by the tech giants like Google and Facebook deprives EU of billions of euros.

Natural gas from cow dung: Natural gas is the cleanest-burning fossil fuel.  Extracting methane from cow manure could create fuel without fracking. “The potential is huge.”

China's agricultural miracle: The scale of the project has stunned international scientists. A landmark project to make agriculture more sustainable in China has significantly cut fertilizer use while boosting crop yields on millions of small farms. The study involved some 1,000 researchers and 21 million smallholders.

Lifespan gains: China’s air quality has improved so significantly in recent years that citizens can expect to see their lifespan increase by 2.4 years.

Gabriella Burnel: Pūrṇamadaḥ Pūrṇamidam

Monotheism and its Weapons: Early Christians were much more likely to close down the academies, shut temples, loot and destroy artwork, forbid traditional practices and burn books. They believed that the world we inhabit is a perilous place, crowded with malevolent supernatural beings, who sometimes manifest themselves in the form of fake gods. It's the Christian’s duty to root these out. 'The Christian destruction of the classical world'.

can indian IT services firms really reinvent themselves? hope so

'The new mantra is, reskill or perish'
March 15, 2018 08:35 IST
'30 to 40% of the industry needs to be reskilled as existing jobs will go to automation.'
'Reskilling is required as some existing jobs will not be required in the future.'
With artificial intelligence, cloud computing, automation, virtual reality, Big Data analytics, 3D printing, etc expected to take over the world, there is an urgent need to re-skill and upskill India's techies.
It is with the intention to upskill 4 million IT employees that Nasscom launched the Future Skills Platform earlier in February.
"I have no doubt that India will play not just a major role, but a dominant role in the adoption of new technologies," Nasscom Chairman Raman Roy, left, below, tells Rediff.com's Shobha Warrier.

no point trying to kowtow to china

Running scared of China
Amulya Ganguli | March 16, 2018
The Chinese are not impressed by a timorous attitude. Instead, they will regard it as just the kind of behaviour they expect from a weaker country.
If India does not want to go down in their estimation, it should not be afraid of letting Beijing know that the acceptance of the Chinese occupation of Tibet does not mean that India will treat those who escaped the dishonour of living under the yoke with disrespect.
The Modi government claims to be a far stronger, nationalistic entity than its predecessor. In no other field of geopolitics is the need for demonstrating its strength greater than on the Tibetan issue.

three by-poll losses and they're already singing obituaries to modi in 2019

a bit premature. and somebody was suggesting this means 'compromise candidate' for a BJP-led coalition will be arun jaitley.

just weeks ago, they were saying if BJP has a brute majority, then yogi could be the new PM in 2019.

all this is just talk.

however, the BJP has to be careful not to piss off its core supporters. even if they do vote, if they don't show enthusiasm, that means the voting % could be quite low (in the 30s and 40s in gorakhpur) and that would spell trouble for the BJP.

Quick notes: Security concerns, EV target...

  • Here you go! Trump halts Broadcom takeover of Qualcomm. “If the deal was completed, the U.S. military was concerned that within 10 years, there would essentially be a dominant player in all of these technologies and that’s essentially Huawei, and then the American carriers would have no choice. They would just have to buy Huawei (equipment).”

  • Stand up to China: Modi sarkaar's genuflection to Chinese concerns on Dalai Lama are not in India’s national interest.

From the archives of this blog: Pollution 'hits China's farmland': This is India's future too - unless plans for 'Chemical Hubs' and other pie-in-the-sky are abandoned and real focus is brought to the agri sector . Remember - before giving them jobs - you have to give them food!!!
